Albania
A country of astounding nature, historic places, kind people, and picturesque towns
I didn’t plan to explore Albania when I was making my way up the Balkans, but while in the Greek town of Meteora, I met travellers coming south from Albania who told stories of historic towns, cheap food and beautiful nature in Albania.
Unable to ignore these stories, I made my way up Albania. I visited the UNESCO heritage sites of Gjirokaster and Berat, hitchhiked up to Tirana, and explored the Accursed Mountains of the northern region.
At the end of my time there, I had my own stories to tell of dramatic peaks, hidden villages, and a deep culture.
